I stayed at Ostel Pondicherry for my first ever solo trip, and I honestly couldn’t have picked a better place. As a woman travelling alone, feeling safe was really important to me, and I felt completely comfortable here from day one. I ended up making so many friends, the vibe is super welcoming, and everyone who works there is genuinely kind and helpful. It never felt forced - just good people, good energy. The location is a huge bonus -- it’s right at the beach, literally steps away. And something I really appreciated: the pictures online are NOT misleading at all. The property looks exactly like the photos, no filters or fake hype. If you’re travelling solo, especially for the first time, and want a place that feels safe, social, and relaxed. Highly recommend Ostel Pondicherry 🌴
I had a wonderful stay at this hostel in Pondicherry. The property is located right by the beach, offering beautiful views and a refreshing sea breeze throughout the day. The rooms and dorms are extremely clean and well maintained. What truly made the experience special were the hosts — super welcoming, cheerful, and always ready to help. They’re doing a fantastic job creating a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. Highly recommended!
I absolutely loved my stay at Ostel! From the delicious food to the spotless cleanliness, everything was on point. It’s honestly the perfect place to stay in Pondicherry. The hosts are incredibly warm and welcoming—special mention to Aastha, who was absolutely lovely. And the best part? The property is right on the beach, which makes the entire experience magical. Waking up to the sea was unbeatable. Would 100% recommend Ostel to anyone visiting Pondi!
Totally Disappointed: This was one of the worst stays I’ve ever had. The reality is nowhere close to the online hype. We prepaid a booking for 5 people more than two weeks in advance, yet at check-in they denied entry to one person, citing “no availability.” This made no sense, as four of us were accommodated together and the dorms were visibly empty. Despite a fully paid booking, one person was forced to stay elsewhere. Later, MakeMyTrip refused a refund, stating that the property did not approve it. The location is a major drawback. A cremation ground is right next to the hostel on one side, and another is less than 100 meters away on the other. At night, locals gather around the area, making it feel unsafe. No one goes to the beach after sunset. The pathway to the beach is filthy—broken glass, open drainage water from a nearby resort, people urinating there, and absolutely no maintenance by the property. Rooms are average at best. Although the washrooms appear clean, water constantly drips, and the AC leaks water inside the rooms. The rules are unreasonable—no alcohol allowed at all. This place feels suitable only for sleeping. Everything is chargeable, with no flexibility whatsoever. The reception staff were arrogant and unhelpful. During a discussion about our booking, one female staff member even laughed instead of assisting us. The manager (Deepak, I believe) was rude and dismissive. Overall, the place does not feel safe for women, and honestly, not even for men. Also worth noting: this property is in Tamil Nadu, not Pondicherry. Police checks are common while entering and exiting Pondicherry.
Ostel is hands down one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in—seriously top-tier! The entire place is impeccably neat and clean, from the spotless dorms and bathrooms to the common areas; you can tell they prioritize hygiene here. Ample secure parking was a huge plus, especially since it's located right next to the sea—falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing is pure bliss, and the beach is just a short stroll away. You almost get a private beach feel here. The staff/volunteers deserves a special shoutout: super friendly, attentive, and always ready to help with recommendations or any needs. I appreciated the strict no-alcohol policy, which kept the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Food options are somewhat limited, but every meal was top-notch quality—fresh, flavorful, and satisfying, especially the local dishes. Evenings in the lounge are a highlight: they organize fun activities like games, movie nights, and casual chats every night, creating a great community vibe that's awesome for solo travelers or groups. They even have scooters for rent! The only hiccup was the billing experience; we had to push a bit to get a proper GST bill, which was a minor frustration. Overall, an exceptional stay—I'll be back!
