HostelExp Varkala

A commercial hostel located 5min walk from the beach with a nice common space area (ping pong table, hammocks, books, board games) and a little rooftop. In general sociable, a bit on a party side, so definitely not the place if you’re looking for peace and quiet. They organise activities for backpackers who stay there like kayaking, dinner nights, party nights, yoga. The dorm I stayed in was small, but decent, however the bathroom needs an update. It was okay for 2-3 nights, but I wouldn’t have stayed longer. All in all, I guess it’s a good budget option and if you’re looking to meet a lot of people. Shout out to the team working there, cause they were all helpful and lovely.

As a solo female traveler, I had a very uncomfortable experience at this hostel. My first interaction with the front manager during check-in was unpleasant due to rude and unprofessional behavior. Although I considered leaving, I decided to stay because finding alternative accommodation at short notice would have involved additional transportation costs and inconvenience. Later in the evening, while I was planning my activities, the manager approached me and repeatedly offered to take me out on his personal bike. I politely declined, but the interaction felt inappropriate and made me uncomfortable. As a solo female traveler, I expect hostel staff to maintain professional boundaries and create a safe environment for guests. What was most disappointing was that instead of feeling welcomed and secure, I felt uneasy during my stay. After my experience, I also noticed that other female travelers had raised similar concerns in their reviews. I hope the management takes guest safety, professionalism, and staff conduct more seriously in the future.

Aphi and the owner are the best people! Super helpful for sorting anything out like surf lessons, food recommendations and transport. They made our stay super memorable and enjoyable. The overall vibe of the hostel is very social family vibes which made for a lovely stay. The roof top is great for yoga in the morning and the location is perfect. I will return

Definitely the best place to stay in Varkala! Beautiful and very social hostel, run by the kindest soul Abhi!! Abhi was always very helpful with whatever I needed during my stay. Thank you so much for having me, I stayed nearly 2 weeks and I had a blast. The hostel has super chill vibes, great to meet new people and do some fun stuff around Varkala :)

We stayed in a private room for 5 days. We had a great stay and can definetly recommend this hostel. They make a big effort in creating an inclusive environment, and in making affordable activities outside of the hostel. Abhi is a big part of why this hostel is great! He is very helpful, welcoming and also makes a great breakfast! Stay at hostelexp if you go to varkala!
